Letting Up Despite Great Faults - “She Spins”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Deerhunter, The Cure, Death Cab for Cutie

Austin’s Letting Up Despite Great Faults released their latest record IV in 2022 and it is as strong as what came before, an indie-rock album loaded with dreamy, angular melodies. While pathing forward with crisp, complex riffs, LUDGF ground their music with lush soundscapes, always making it sound easy, but not necessarily simple. Vocals are light and echoey, percussion out of the way, but LUDGF hold things together on IV with a rooted, indie rock fullness. It’s arguably their strongest front-to-back effort in a decade and a half as a band, and SXSW should prove an excellent opportunity to take these engrossing tracks on a live excursion next month. 2022 Review: 00s indie rock vets Letting Up Despite Great Faults find a way to somehow sound breezy and light under the cover of shoegaze fuzz, a trend continued on two early singles from upcoming 2022 record IV. “Gemini” is a pulsating rock number, but underneath look out for LUDGF’s sunny power-pop songwriting delivered with a dreamy whisper. Latest single “Corners Passed” lets their catchy side out front a bit more - it’s all an interesting evolution from the Austin band's synth-rock roots and makes IV an exciting prospect come this March.
