The Lemon Twigs - “Corner of My Eye”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…Foxygen, ELO, Supertramp

If power pop is defined as reverence for early Beatles songwriting, The Lemon Twigs are whatever you would call following in the footsteps of the latter half of their catalog. Cinematic and expertly crafted, The Lemon Twigs move from crisp beauty to raw rock and roll throughout their catalog, recently highlighted by the pastoral and sweet single “Corner of My Eye”. It’s the first track since their last full-length Songs for the General Public and there is some growth in the delicacy of “Corner of My Eye” that’s an interesting guidepost for whatever is on the way next. Speaking of their back catalog, there isn’t a miss throughout each of their three full-lengths, a collection of songs that speak to the range of The Lemon Twigs’ songwriting (psych pop, classic rock, tints of classic R&B). While stretching, the nostalgic core keeps the Long Island band’s sound grounded and easy to digest. It is full and textured, but The Lemon Twigs are careful to avoid overdoing their fusion abilities to really explore the root of each song. (Kevin McStravick)
