Living Hour - “Hold Me In Your Mind”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Beach House, Mitski, Big Thief

Living Hour are inching away from the psych-rock songwriting that defined their first two records into something more haunting and beautiful on Someday Is Today, a strong collection of lush and patient reflections. Vocals are more whispered, guitar lines more echoed, a defined winter scene embodied across the record’s eleven tracks. The result is pretty and moving, a natural direction for the band as they highlight the vulnerable soul within their performance. While less traditionally adventurous, the move is a bold one to commit fully with depth and emotionality in mind. (Kevin McStravick)

2022 Review: Dreamy psychedelic rock defines Living Hour’s 2019 record Softer Faces, a light sounding record that is still full of sound. Soft ambience turns to post-rock flourishes on the ebbing and flowing record, whispery vocals floating like surf-rock echoes with hypnotic appeal. Slowcore rock influences weigh down much of Living Hour’s music, the pace allowing space for off-kilter guitar lines and synth-like waves to provide the backdrop of the Canadian band’s sound. Their latest is single “Double Bus”, a collaboration with fellow psych pop artists Peel Dream Magazine and one of the band’s most experimental and entrancing songs, building like a softened chant before it fades out of existence.
