MUNA - “Silk Chiffon” (feat. Phoebe Bridgers)

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…CHVRCHES, Purity Ring, HAIM

MUNA are a great example of a band continuing to evolve while still staying true to their core sound, broadening their breezy, electro-pop catalog with stronger hooks and melodies leading to recent breakout “Silk Chiffon”, a collaboration with fellow hitting-it-out-of-the-park rock artist Phoebe Bridgers. New synth pop and classic rock/pop tones nicely intermingle in MUNA’s music, one loaded with hooks that are part dance-oriented and part gentle, soft pop. It’s a sound both immediate and welcoming, warm and pulsing forward. MUNA is a band that is in the middle of hitting their strongest stride, a great time to catch them at SXSW and leave with vocal hooks that won’t leave your head for weeks. (Kevin McStravick)

2016 Review: MUNA’s debut singles are part electronic R&B and part classic pop, more sugary than the mysterious notes of her peers. “Loudspeaker” is refreshing in its unapologetic love of cheesy 70s/80s pop/rock, a song that that will have anyone head-bobbing by first chorus. The big sound that MUNA introduces on “Loudspeaker” is an indicator we’ll see her on festival stages in no time. Well produced and simply written, it succeeds fully on all its intentions. Follow-up “Winterbreak” is several notches more subtle, still honoring the same forms but on a chillier path than its predecessor. While pared back, it’s the more powerful of the two, hitting emotionally both in the song’s softened production and MUNA’s sweet, slightly rawer vocal.
