Pelvis Wrestley - “Act2ualize”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Ween, Sweet Spirit, The Flaming Lips

Psych-pop/alt-country welders Pelvis Wrestley are set to release their sophomore record, ANDY, or: The Four Horsegirls of the Apocalypse, on Valentine’s Day this week and the romantic connection holds true to the sweet-souled spirit that permeates the album’s early singles. Everything about Pelvis Wrestley’s music is weird and fun, but not in a hyper-pop way, but rather in their playful approach to countrified rock and roll. While there’s a tongue-in-cheek vibe here, there’s also a raw vulnerability that comes across in their version of pop music that is charming and real. More grown up and focused as well, the silly name is becoming deceptive given how strong Pelvis Wrestley sounds in their own lane. (Kevin McStravick)

2020 Review: Austin’s Pelvis Wrestley moves to merge two disparate genres in their music, melding classic country and eclectic electronic pop for a sound that feels transferred from past to future. Led by ANDY frontman Benjamin Violet and featuring members of daphne tunes and Sun June, Pelvis Wrestley has a spirited, communal sound to their rooted-yet-psychedelic songwriting as shown on their debut single “Susanna”. A dreamy, hopeful pop gem, “Susanna” transcends Americana melodies to bright synths and a bubbling, chamber folk atmosphere, a sweet and loving track that is an exciting introduction to a band aiming to excavate a unique sonic space.
