Spyres - “Money"

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Blondshell, The Breeders, MUNA

Spyres music blends upbeat pop with alt-rock inferences in their sophomore EP Karaoke Sellouts, uber-catchy tracks brimming with energy and catalyzed with enough feedback to crunch those power-chord choruses. The unabashed hooks that ride through every second of Spyres’ music are charming and honest. While a rock and roll band at their core, there are hints of electronic pop and dance modes on Karaoke Sellouts, more melodies to push their sing-a-long vocal lines up a sonic ladder. With indie music trending more wistful and distant in recent years, Spyres sound like a bucket of cold water in how out-front they sound on this latest collection. Influences from 60s-90s eras keep jumping out in Spyres’ full and urgent sound and there’s not a bad apple in the batch. These tracks will expectedly crush live too and Spyres has the ability to be one of those pre-LP, ‘you gotta check out’ bands come SXSW 2024.
