Subsonic Eye - “Yearning"

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Slow Pulp, Japanese Breakfast, Frankie Cosmos

Melancholic and melodic indie rock drives the bulk of Subsonic Eye’s music, dreamy but pushing forward rhythmically on their latest record All Around You. The Singaporean band’s fourth record, they welcome post-punk influences into their sound as well and nicely find themselves in denser waters. That balance of light and heavy is well kept in Subsonic Eye’s sound, keeping things interesting by not venturing too far into any of those extremes. Their sound is somewhat lo fi, but not to the degree on unnecessary distance and each guitar melody and bass-line can still be heard clearly through the purposeful fuzz. Vibes aside, Subsonic Eye find catchy moments in songs like “Circle” and “J-O-B”, slices of power-pop that feel natural in Subsonic Eye’s hands. (Kevin McStravick)
