Amy Root - “Elif”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Flume, Disclosure, RL Grime

Amy Root’s sound is rooted in dance music and indeed keeps steady house-influenced rhythms throughout their tracks, but the Dutch duo construct their songs like scattered fragments of soul, pop, and rock music pieced together in down-tempo rhythms and soundscapes. Their latest single is “Elif”, among the most spacious tracks in Amy Root’s early catalog and one that patiently builds with a deep, chant-like vocal bubbling underneath, paired with trance experimentation “June” for more club-leaning beats by song’s end. Amy Root have one other single beyond their debut EP Lynn and “Alike” takes notes from grey indie rock and industrial percussion to add some more depth to their mysteriously infectious grooves.
