Austin’s Caroline Rose turned a hard musical corner on her excellent 2018 record Loner, finding a cool pocket within a dream pop/indie rock landscape with just hints of her alt country past. What makes Loner so successful is how she transcends her personal storytelling to this new sound, creating a rawness to her songwriting even when embracing funky grooves like on “Jeannie Becomes a Mom” and “Animal”. Punk rock, new wave pop, and breezy psych rock also play key roles in Caroline Rose’s updated approach, continued in 2020 on the first single from upcoming release Superstar “Feel the Way I Want”, a softer pop vibe that has the ever-evolving artist at her most fresh and comfortable. 2014 Review: Alt country newcomer Caroline Rose starts her debut record America Religious with a statement, both lyrically and musically. “America Religious” reflects on cultural persuasion from a personal perspective, a literary storyteller’s track that immediately calls for attention. Even with that, Rose doesn’t open her story until at least a minute in the track, allowing the folk-bluegrass-rock hybrid sound take the deserved forefront. There’s a passion throughout the whole band’s playing - hopefully the folks in the studio are also Rose’s touring companions.
