Drinker - “Something I Want”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Alt-J, slenderbodies, Bob Moses

LA electro-pop duo Drinker released their debut full-length Fragments in 2019, a widely spaced, ambient R&B record that stirs with hypnotic appeal. Patient, echoing soundscapes set the scene for their slow, digitally beautiful sound; these are like catchy pop songs that have been filtered into ghostly reflections of their former selves. Minimal percussion and bass move their songs along at a measured pace, washing melodies together in a heady, grey concoction. (Kevin McStravick)

2019 Review: Mysteriously and entrancingly subtle, Drinker’s “Fragments II” lurks in minor airs, melodies floating through reflective streams caught between dusk and dawn. An electronic pop duo from Los Angeles, Drinker release their debut in 2019 and it’s set to be a haunting, creative and dynamic affair. Paired with “Fragments II” is “Follow”, an ambient R&B track with a surprisingly catchy choral hook. They’re a band able to a lot with a little, economically using synth melodies as the rhythm itself throughout both tracks. Vocals are used like echoing mirrors, keeping distance to match the emotional solitude that Drinker is able to make fulfilling and whole.
