Working Men’s Club - “X”
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…Cold Cave, Neu!, Tangerine Dream
Taking influence from krautrock, post-punk, and house genres, Working Men’s Club have a revivalist, synth rock vibe on their self-titled debut that is incessantly grooving. Crafted more as dance tracks than pop songs, Working Men’s Club put the onus on rhythm as they deliver goth-pop melodies atop four-on-the-floor electronic percussion. Haunting and bouncing synth lines alike power their deep, psych trances, but there are elements of verse and chorus in their songs to still connect to rock/pop ears. The UK band followed up their self-titled debut recently with a pair of singles “X” and “Y”, songs that break slightly out of the band’s dance-rock vibes to embrace some crunchier, indie rock tones. Working Men’s Club showcase at Cedar Street Courtyard Thursday night and The Green Jay on Friday with FUR, Meatraffle, and Heavy Salad. (Kevin McStravick)
